Why Grind Size Matters
Grind size is one of the most important — and most overlooked — factors in brewing great coffee. Too coarse and your coffee tastes weak and watery. Too fine and it turns bitter and over-extracted. Getting it right makes all the difference.
At Light & Hope, we offer four grind options for most of our coffees. Here's exactly when to use each one.
Coarse Grind
Best for: French Press, Cold Brew, Percolator
Coarse grounds look similar to rough sea salt — chunky and uneven. The large particle size slows extraction, which is perfect for brewing methods that steep coffee in water for a longer time. If you love a rich, full-bodied French press or a smooth cold brew, coarse is your grind.
Standard (Medium) Grind
Best for: Drip Coffee Makers, Pour-Over, Siphon
Standard grind is the most versatile option — it looks like coarse sand and works beautifully with most home coffee makers. If you're not sure which grind to choose, start here. It's the everyday workhorse that delivers a balanced, clean cup.
Espresso Grind
Best for: Espresso Machines, Moka Pot, AeroPress
Espresso grind is very fine — almost like powdered sugar. The tiny particles extract quickly under high pressure, producing the concentrated, intense shot that forms the base of lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos. Use this grind only with espresso-style brewing methods.
Whole Bean
Best for: Anyone who wants maximum freshness
Whole beans stay fresh the longest because the protective outer layer is intact. If you have a grinder at home, whole bean is always the best choice — grind just before brewing for the freshest, most aromatic cup possible. Pair with any of our burr grinders for the best results.
Our Recommendation
Not sure where to start? Order Standard grind for your first bag — it works with almost every brewer. Once you dial in your preferred brewing method, switch to the grind that matches it perfectly.
